Metalworking Coolants

 Coolants are water soluble fluids designed to provide cooling and lubrication during metalworking operations. The use of machine coolant extends cutting tool life, improves part finish and tolerance and improves productivity. Coolants are generally grouped into three major categories: soluble oils, semi-synthetics, and synthetics.

Ashburn has a full range of high performance synthetic coolants, semi synthetic coolants, and soluble oils along with coolant performance and maintenance additives. Ashburn’s APEX line of coolants utilizes the latest technologies to develop leading-edge products. APEX products are developed to provide the highest level of performance and operator safety at an optimal operating cost.

Synthetic Coolants

Synthetic coolants are metalworking fluid concentrates that contain no mineral oil. When mixed with water, they form a clear fluid. Synthetics have excellent cooling properties and run very clean providing long life in the sump.

Synthetic metalworking fluids lend themselves well to grinding and light-duty machining. Synthetics work great for grinding because they allow for swift settling of the small fines created during grinding. Grinding fluids should be cleaner than machining fluids because they cover a larger work area and can splash more than a machining operation. Whereas water-soluble oils will absorb tramp oils, synthetics typically will reject the oils – allowing them to be skimmed from the surface of the metalworking fluid. In some applications, this feature allows synthetics greater longevity in the sump. Many synthetics work well for machining all metals and some of the newer and more expensive synthetics can approach the tool life of water-soluble oils. The disadvantage of synthetics is that some components such as lubricants and rust preventives can be used up before the rest of the metalworking fluid. 


APEX 6500—

APEX 6500 is a moderate to heavy duty synthetic coolant. It has superior oil rejecting capabilities. Formulated with extremely high lubricity for high speed machining with high feed rates. APEX 6500 runs very clean and is low foaming in hard and soft water applications. Works well in both ferrous and most nonferrous applications.

APEX 6420—

APEX 6420 is a light to moderate duty synthetic coolant. It has superior oil rejecting capabilities. Formulated for use in grinding applications and light duty machining. APEX 6420 runs very clean and is low foaming in hard and soft water applications. Works well in both ferrous and most nonferrous applications.

APEX 6000—

APEX 6000 is a moderate to heavy duty water soluble machining and grinding fluid. It is chemically designed to resist bacteria and fungus. It forms a solution that resists tramp oil contamination. It provides long term worry free sump life. This product can be used on ferrous and nonferrous metals. It is formulated to protect the machine tool from rust and corrosion and the fluid residue will protect ways and slides.

APEX 3500—

APEX 3500 is a high speed turning and grinding coolant chemically designed to resist bacteria and fungus and provide long term worry free sump life. APEX 3500 forms a solution that resists tramp oil contamination. This product can be used on ferrous and nonferrous metals. It is formulated to protect the machine tool from rust and corrosion and the fluid residue will protect ways and slides. Does not contain sulfur, phosphorus, chlorine or other halogens.

APEX 6590—

APEX 6590 is a high lubricity, heavy-duty synthetic coolant designed for the most difficult machining applications. It is fortified with a special blend of high viscosity index polymer lubricants. These polymers remain soluble in water until activated by the heat of friction during machining and grinding. This results in coolant with excellent lubricity at the tool/chip interface, yet with very little carry off on parts.

The APEX 6590 performs like a semi-synthetic, but runs extremely clean, has superior oil rejecting capabilities and is very low foaming. It leaves a soft fluid residue that protects the machine tool and parts. This protective film will not interfere with heat treating or welding. Prevents corrosion on ferrous and most nonferrous metals.

Semi Synthetic Coolants

Semi-synthetic coolants are metalworking fluid concentrates that contain a small amount of oil (usually less than 30%) as well as synthetic lubricants and other additives. When mixed with water, they form a translucent fluid. Semi-synthetics combine the physical lubricity of soluble oils with the chemical lubricity, cooling and cleanliness of synthetic coolants.

Semi-synthetic coolants are a good compromise between the water-soluble oils and synthetics – they are hybrid products of both water soluble oils and synthetics. Therefore, they carry both the advantages and disadvantages of both groups. Semi-synthetics are less likely to cause rust than synthetics, will still provide rust protection because of their oil content and will emulsify tramp oils. Semi-synthetics are suited ideally for machining and grinding of cast iron. Manufacturers will formulate different grades of products, so that there are products available for all types of machining operations. Each category of coolant can have low- to high-grade products. Typically, the higher the price of the product, the better performance it will give. Just because a metalworking fluid is lower in price does not mean that the customer will save money in the long run, because tool life can be affected greatly by metalworking fluids.


APEX 7700EP

APEX 7700 EP is a heavy duty semi-synthetic water soluble metalworking fluid designed for use on ferrous and most nonferrous metals including cast iron and aluminum. It is fortified with extreme pressure additives for difficult machining and grinding operations. It has excellent emulsion stability in hard water and combines the cooling and cleanliness of synthetics with the rust protection and lubricity of soluble oils. It is suitable for turning, milling, drilling, sawing and grinding in individual sumps or central systems.

APEX 7700 EP contains well balanced additive technology proven to extend fluid life and inhibit microbial growth. It forms a translucent emulsion that protects machines and parts from corrosion without depositing tacky or slippery residues. This robust multi-purpose metalworking fluid provides an economical solution to high fluid usage and waste by eliminating frequent system recharges, high make-up rates and excessive use of costly tank side additives.

APEX 7700 EP works well in hard and soft water. It will not form hard water soaps or cause excessive foaming in soft water. The product has a mild pH and leaves machines clean and free of gummy tramp oil deposits which enhances operator acceptance. It provides trouble free performance on a wide range of metals and diverse operations in individual sumps and is equally suitable for continuous production requiring unimpeded efficiency, low maintenance and maximum fluid life.

APEX 8500—

APEX 8500 is a heavy duty, semi-synthetic water soluble metalworking fluid. It is heavily fortified with extreme pressure additives for use in difficult metal cutting and metal forming operations. It is a suitable replacement for straight oils in many applications.

APEX 8500 has excellent emulsion stability in hard water and combines the cooling and cleanliness of synthetics with the rust protection and lubricity of soluble oils. This product works well in hard and soft water. It will not form hard water soaps or cause excessive foaming in soft water. The mild pH leaves machines clean and free of gummy tramp oil deposits which enhances operator acceptance. It provides trouble-free performance on a wide range of metals and diverse operations in individual sumps and is equally suitable for continuous production requiring unimpeded efficiency, low maintenance and maximum fluid life.

APEX 7900—

APEX 7900 is a semi-synthetic coolant for machining and grinding ferrous and non-ferrous metals. It has almost no odor, is low foaming, and provides excellent bio-resistance for long life in both individual sumps and large central systems.

APEX 7900 forms a translucent emulsion that protects machines and parts from corrosion without depositing tacky or slippery residues. This coolant runs very clean with minimal drag out and quickly rejects tramp oils. With excellent lubricity, long sump life and low maintenance, this fluid can help reduce the number of products being used in a facility.

APEX 7090—

APEX 7090 is a moderate to heavy duty semi-synthetic water soluble cutting and grinding fluid. It is manufactured for turning, milling, drilling, sawing, and grinding in individual machine sumps or central systems. It will increase blade, tool, or wheel life and production. The raw materials are designed to resist bacteria and fungus. It provides long term worry free sump life. This product can be used on ferrous and nonferrous metals.

APEX 7050—

APEX 7050 is a moderate to heavy duty, semi-synthetic water soluble cutting and grinding fluid. Excellent for use in difficult machining of all metals. APEX 7000NP—

Soluble Oils

Soluble Oils are metalworking fluid concentrates containing a high percentage of oil (usually greater than 50%). When mixed with water, they form an emulsion that has a milky appearance. The high oil content provides excellent physical lubricity for the cutting operation as well as protection for the machine tool.


APEX 9100—

APEX 9100 is a moderate to severe duty, general-purpose, water-soluble machining and grinding fluid. It is chemically designed to resist bacteria and fungus. It forms a stable emulsion that resists tramp oil contamination, and provides long-term worry-free sump life. This product can be used on ferrous and nonferrous metals.

Ashburn Mist—

Ashburn Mist is a heavy duty water soluble machining and grinding mist coolant. This product can be used on ferrous and nonferrous metals. It is formulated to protect the machine tool from rust and corrosion and the fluid residue will protect ways and slides. Ashburn Mist is non-irritating to the machinist. It extends tool life, and improves finish on parts. Ashburn Mist is chemically designed to work well in all mist applicators.

Ashburn 4100 Carbide Grinding Fluid—

Ashburn 4100 Carbide Grinding Fluid contains raw materials that are less likely to leach cobalt than other synthetic coolants and is fortified with additional advanced additives that resist cobalt leaching. It also has excellent foam control, sump life and rust protection.

APEX Torch Coolant—

APEX Torch Coolant is a propylene glycol and de-ionized water mixture designed for use in the cooling system of plasma arc cutters. This product provides excellent conductive cooling to remove heat from the cutting torch. It provides corrosion protection, and also protects from freezing in cold environments.

Coolant Additives & Maintenance

Coolant additives are not usually needed when Ashburn coolants are properly maintained and operating in a good environment. However, there are situations where a coolant is allowed to sit stagnant or operate in a poor environment for extended periods of time. In these situations it may be necessary to use additives to bring the coolant back to the correct specifications.

Coolant maintenance equipment is necessary to ensure that your coolant continues to perform optimally. Correctly mixing the coolant, maintaining the concentration, and keeping the coolant free of contaminants are the basic necessities of proper coolant maintenance.

Coolant Rejuvenator—

A sump-side additive designed to control bacteria in order to prevent rancidity and prolong the life of your coolant. Concentrated. Normally added at 12 oz per 50 gallons of coolant.

Coolant Conditioner—

A sump-side additive designed to control fungus in order to prevent its growth and prolong the life of your coolant. Concentrated. Normally added at 3 oz per 50 gallons of coolant.

Ashburn 3200 RI—

Ashburn 3200 RI can be used in circulating coolant systems to prevent rust from occurring on machine tool surfaces and machined parts.

Ashburn 3200 RI is a heavy-duty, multi-purpose, synthetic, water-soluble rust and corrosion preventative designed for in-process protection of ferrous and nonferrous materials. This product will provide up to 9 months of indoor rust protection. Leaves a soft, non-tacky residue.

Plasma Arc Water Table Fluid. Ashburn 3200 RI is an excellent fluid for use in CNC plasma cutter water tables. Prevents rust and corrosion on water table surfaces and on parts. Also prevents bacterial growth to provide long-term tank life.

Ashburn Defoamer 4730—

Ashburn Defoamer 4730 is a sump-side coolant additive that will quickly eliminate foam. When added to coolant, Ashburn Defoamer 4730 will dissipate existing foam and prevent the development of new foam. This product is compatible with all metals.

– How It Works

  1. Dirty coolant is brought in through the skimmer head where it travels to the bottom of a coalescing cartridge.
  2. The coolant travels through the coalescing media causing small emulsified oil droplets to meet and join together (coalesce). As the oil droplets increase in size, they release from the media and float to the top of the barrel.
  3. Clean coolant is continually returned to the sump from the bottom of the barrel through a discharge pipe.
  4. The tramp oil collects at the top of the barrel where it can be drained to an oil waste pail.
